Electropolished surfaces are found to be at least 10 times less radioactive than untreated surfaces under the same process conditions, and are also much easier to decontaminate.
As electropolishing reduces the surface area by around 90%, it is easy to understand why various tests show that an exposed surface absorbs less than a tenth of the radioactivity compared with a pickled or brushed stainless steel plate. For the same reasons, decontamination is simpler.
Micro-deburring
Electropolishing is unrivalled in removing small burrs formed during grinding or bead blasting. The surface area is significantly reduced by the removal of micro-burrs, which helps prevent adhesion. Thanks to the rounded profile, the surface is smoother even when the Ra value is comparable. From a chemical perspective, this is referred to as iron enrichment because the outer layer, stripped of impurities and iron, is richer in the material’s inherent chromium. The chromium oxide layer also provides maximum corrosion resistance.
Recommended treatments: pickling and passivation, electropolishing, micro-deburring.
