Rouging of stainless steel in WFI (Water for Injection) systems and clean steam systems is a well-known phenomenon. Stainless steel that comes into contact with water for injection or is used in clean steam systems can show discolouration after a relatively short period of time: this discolouration can range from brown and red to purple or royal blue.
Rouging is generally considered as a surface deposit rather than a form of corrosion.

Electrolytic polishing, in combination with the appropriate pre- and post-treatments, is an excellent method for preventing rouging and removing existing rouging. It is an effective treatment for controlling this phenomenon and restoring the surface quality of stainless steel systems.

The treatment is particularly relevant for stainless steel components and systems in pharmaceutical applications, WFI systems and clean steam installations.
